Public Health
MAPC’s approach to public health is outlined in the MetroFuture Regional Plan. Our public health strategy includes:
- linking health and planning,
- broadening universal early education and care,
- using school based programs to help children establish healthy lifestyles,
- ensuring access to healthy food,
- reducing exposure to environmental contaminants,
- ensuring equitable access to quality health care, and
- coordinating policies to create an elder-friendly region.
Public Health within MAPC's Municipal Governance division brings information, experience, and innovation together to successfully manage projects as well as collaborate with organizations working to support the achievement of these strategies.

Public Health Region 4A Coalition
Comprised of 34 communities stretching from Littleton and Wilmington in the North sub-region down to Wrentham and Sharon in the South sub-region, the 4A Coalition was created in 2003 under the Center for Emergency Preparedness and is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The members of the coalition collaborate to meet the goals associated with the Massachusetts Department of Public Health Emergency Preparedness initiatives, other regional public health efforts, and to strengthen local public health emergency preparedness capabilities for each of the member communities and the region as a whole. MAPC serves as the host and fiscal agent to the 4A Coalition providing financial and administrative management.
Region 4A Medical Reserve Corps
In response to medical emergencies and general staff emergency preparedness, the 4A Coalition is also a policy and funding source for the 4A Medical Reserve Corps. The Region 4A MRC actively recruits and trains both medical and non-medical personnel to respond to emergency situations. Volunteers from across the 34 communities have helped respond to everything from ice storms to H1N1 mitigation efforts and vaccination clinics. More information on the 4A Medical Reserve Corps can be found at www.region4a-mrc.org.
